Everybody knows big loudspeakers deliver big sound. A correct definition of “big” may be debatable but typically associated with a great bass. And for a reason. Remember the feeling of deep soundstage, chest-thumping drums and sheer scale of music or sound track that large loudspeaker brings?
Large bass drivers (aka woofers) move a lot of air to create these explosive sound waves. Simply put, bass is directly proportional to woofer’s size and excursion (back and forth movement range). So it begs a question: can woofer be downscaled for portable electronics use without loosing its oomph?
Audio engineers have a bunch of tricks up their sleeves by trading woofer’s size for longer excursion, adding ports (vents) / passive radiators into the enclosure to extend bass response but none of these methods solves a fundamental issue: small woofer = small sound.
This is why countless audio companies continue to bend laws of physics with varying degree of failure in their ultimate quest to build a perfect portable speaker. The quest is obvious – a speaker that small enough to fit into any luggage and big enough to deliver punchy, natural bass at the same level of listening experience as home hifi. But there is no practical engineering solution to this problem within a traditional design paradigm.
Speakertec is cutting this Gordian knot by combining two different identities within a single consumer object. Calling on Yin or Yang, Jekyll or Hyde to serve a very specific function and at the best of their abilities rather than compromising on everything.
We have been "thinking outside the box" (sorry for a pun) to create a technology capable of blending these identities into a “swiss army knife” of portable audio gadget.
Our first speaker can be flattened to fit into standard 13” laptop sleeve but also folded into impressive mid-size bookshelf tower to deliver uncompromised, natural sound in a vacation home or hotel room. It is muscular enough for a party and gentle for a romantic getaway.
While folding speakers have been made before, they never evolved beyond audio toy or design concept status because of unresolved electro-mechanical challenges. The key obstacle here is to create a foldable case capable to withstand an enormous level of vibrations caused by powerful woofers.
Our product achieves that objective by combining advanced materials with innovative mechanical engineering resulting in an extremely light, thin and rigid foldable cabinet and pairing it with custom designed shallow active woofer.
By re-thinking an object form, Speakertec opens fundamentally new possibilities in portable audio design including laptop, tablet and mobile segments. Imagine gaming or music enthusiast laptop that sounds as good as your desktop monitors or tablet case doubling as a powerful travel speaker – we hope you getting a taste of what is coming.
And it is just a beginning.
